Mini Excavator Hire Darwin
A 1.7 tonne mini excavator with an experienced operator, for jobs the big machines can't reach.
Through side gates, into backyards and around established homes without wrecking the place.
Small machine, proper excavator
Dobson Excavations offers mini excavator hire in Darwin on a wet hire basis, with one of our operators running the machine. No licence needed, no trailer to tow, no learning curve on someone else's property.
A mini excavator earns its keep where a bigger machine simply cannot go. It fits through side gates and narrow access, works close to fences, paving and established gardens, and leaves far less mess behind than a machine twice its size. On an established Darwin block that difference usually matters more than raw digging power.
It's still a real excavator. With the right attachments it digs footings and trenches, breaks concrete, drills holes and shifts material properly. When the job outgrows it, our 8 tonne excavator picks up where it leaves off.
Will it fit down the side of my house?
This is the question we get asked most, and it's the whole reason a mini excavator exists. Here's what to check before you call.
The narrowest gap
Measure the tightest point along the route in, usually a side gate, a path between the house and the fence, or a gap between the carport and a retaining wall. That single measurement decides everything.
What's overhead
Eaves, pergolas, low branches, clotheslines and power lines all set a height limit. Note anything the machine has to pass under on the way in and while it's working.
The surface it crosses
Tell us if the route runs over pavers, a new driveway, irrigation or a septic system. Rubber tracks are gentle, but it's better to plan the route than repair it afterwards.
Not sure? Measure your narrowest gap, take a photo of the access, and send both through. We'll tell you straight away whether the mini fits, or whether you'd be better off with a bobcat or a different approach.
Send Your PhotosWhat we use the mini excavator for
Swap the attachment and the same machine goes from digging trenches to breaking out concrete.
Digging & Trenching
Service trenches for plumbers and electricians, footings for a deck or extension, and holes for tanks, pits and pumps. Accurate work close to existing structures where you need to know exactly where the bucket is going.
- Sewer & water
- Stormwater
- Footings
- Retaining walls
- Tank & pit holes
Concrete & Rock Breaking
With the hammer fitted, the mini breaks out old slabs, paths, footings and rock without the noise and labour of doing it by hand. It's the quickest way to remove a concrete area from a backyard you can't get a truck into.
- Old slabs
- Paths & driveways
- Footings
- Rock in trenches
Landscaping & Clearing
Shaping garden beds, stripping turf, pulling small stumps and clearing overgrown corners. The mini gets into the parts of a yard a bobcat can't reach, and it can work around trees and structures you want kept.
- Garden beds
- Turf removal
- Small stumps
- Levelling
- Pond & feature digs
Post & Pier Holes
The auger drills clean, consistent holes for fence posts, deck piers, pergolas and shade sails. Far faster than a hand auger, and it keeps going when it hits the hard ground that stops a two person post hole digger.
- Fence posts
- Deck piers
- Pergolas
- Shade sails
Small Pool Excavation
Plenty of Darwin pools go into backyards with no truck access at all. The mini digs the hole and a mini dump truck shuttles the spoil out, so the pool goes in without taking the fence down.
- Plunge pools
- Tight access digs
- Spoil removal
- Established yards

Mini excavator hire for trades and homeowners
Homeowners
Backyard projects, drainage problems and clearing space for a shed, deck or pool, without the yard being destroyed.
Plumbers
Sewer and water connections, leaking mains and pit installs in established yards with no room for a bigger machine.
Electricians
Conduit trenches to sheds, pumps and gates, dug to depth and kept clear of existing services.
Landscapers
Bed shaping, turf stripping, retaining wall cuts and feature digs in yards a bobcat cannot enter.
Builders & Renovators

Jobs the mini handles well
If it's small, awkward to get to, or surrounded by things you don't want damaged, the mini is usually the answer.
Backyard Drainage
Chasing water away from the house before the next wet, with trenches, pits and spoon drains dug to fall.
Shed & Deck Footings
Footings and pier holes dug to your engineer's dimensions in behind an existing home.
Concrete Removal

Septic & Tank Holes
Excavation for septic systems, leach drains and underground water tanks on rural and suburban blocks.
Garden Transformations
Reshaping a tired yard, stripping old turf and cutting in beds, paths and retaining walls.
Stump & Root Removal
Pulling small stumps and root balls out of established gardens without disturbing everything around them.
Planning your job
Five minutes of checking beforehand is what keeps a tight access job to a single visit.
-
Measure your access
The narrowest gap along the route in, plus anything low overhead. Send us the measurement and a photo and we'll confirm the machine fits before you commit.
-
Locate underground services
Lodge a free request with Before You Dig Australia (BYDA). On an established block there's usually more buried than people expect, particularly irrigation and old septic lines.
-
Clear the route
Move pot plants, bins, cars and anything fragile off the path in. Unlocking the side gate ahead of time saves everyone standing around.
-
Decide where the spoil goes
Soil has to go somewhere, and in a backyard there's rarely room to leave it. Tell us whether it stays on site or gets carted away so we can bring the right gear.
-
Think about the season
Wet season ground is soft and tracks mark more easily. If the job can wait for the dry, the finish is usually better and the clean up smaller.
Does the mini excavator come with an operator?
Yes. We hire the mini excavator wet, meaning it arrives with one of our experienced operators. You don't need a licence or any experience, and you're not responsible for running the machine.
Will it fit through my side gate?
Usually, but measure first. Take the width at the narrowest point of the route in and send it through with a photo, and we'll confirm before you book. If it won't fit, we'll say so and suggest another way to get the job done.
Will the tracks damage my lawn or driveway?
The mini runs on rubber tracks, which are much gentler than steel and are designed for finished surfaces. On soft ground or new paving there can still be marking, so tell us about the route and we'll plan it or lay protection where needed.
What's the difference between a mini excavator and a bobcat?
An excavator digs down with a boom and bucket while the machine stays put, which makes it right for trenches, footings and holes. A bobcat pushes, scrapes and carries material across a site. Many jobs use both. Tell us what you're doing and we'll recommend the right one.
Is a mini excavator the same as a mini digger?
Yes, they're the same machine. Digger is the more common word in everyday conversation around Darwin. You can see our whole range on the digger hire Darwin page.
Can it break up concrete?
Yes, with the hammer attachment fitted. It handles slabs, paths, old footings and rock. Let us know there's concrete to remove when you enquire so we bring the hammer on the day.
What if my job turns out to be too big for it?
We'll tell you up front if we think the mini is undersized, because a job that drags on costs you more than the right machine would have. We also run an 8 tonne excavator and bobcats, so we can scale up without you finding another contractor.
How much does mini excavator hire cost in Darwin?
It depends on the job, how long it takes, the attachments needed and site access. Because the machine comes with an operator, the quote covers the work rather than just the machine. Contact us with your job details for a free, no-obligation quote.
